All About Matt

Back in 2021, I interned under my father-in-law, Sherman Hu. He put me through a six-month intensive on everything SEO. It was like drinking water from a fire hose—haha—but it gave me the skills to hit the ground running. My goal was to be able to provide for my wife and me as we spent a year abroad in Italy. Using what I learned from Sherman, combined with my own testing and strategies, I’ve been able to consistently deliver page-one results for both local and national companies.

Quickfire Questions, Honest Answers

I recently built a website for a garage door company in Chilliwack. I designed it using Donald Miller’s StoryBrand framework—guiding potential clients through a journey to find a solution to their problem while positioning my client as the solution. He landed his first inquiry through the website within a week of launching. In under a month, he ranked on page one for three of his target keywords. It’s been just over a month now, and he’s currently sitting at #4 for “Chilliwack Garage Doors.”

I assess where they are, where they want to go, and what needs to happen to bridge the gap. That might mean clarifying their message, creating uniformity across platforms so customers (and Google) don’t get confused, or simply getting them set up online—since some clients come to me having relied solely on word-of-mouth and now want to expand their brand.

From there, I take an SEO-first approach, prioritizing strategies that will have the biggest impact based on competition, search demand, and their specific industry. Sometimes that means optimizing their website for local search, and other times it’s about building authority through content and backlinks. Every client’s situation is different, so I focus on data-driven decisions to make sure we’re not just improving rankings, but actually driving real business growth.

I stay current by attending SEO webinars and keeping up with industry insights to track what’s working (and what’s not). Then, I run my own tests to verify strategies before implementing them.

I have a security company client in Vancouver, and we recently got him to the #1 spot on Google Search for “Executive Protection”—a goal we’d been working toward for a while. The client was ecstatic! That was a huge win and a big celebration for both of us.

My wife and I love coffee, so we frequently visit Good Kid for our caffeine fix. We also enjoy Old Hand and Fox & Glove.

Italy is dear to my heart after spending a year there. One place we didn’t get to visit during that time was Turkey, so that’s high on our list for the next big trip.
