If you have taken an Introduction to Business or Intro Marketing class the very first thing your teacher would have covered is the 4 P’s:

  • Product
  • Price
  • Place
  • Promotion

Search Engine Watch recently had an interesting spin on this concept in generating the “4 P’s of Search Engine Optimization”:

Proactive – Internet marketing and SEO trends change every day. Rather than be reactive when these changes occur it is better to be proactive and “stay ahead of the curve.”

Persistence – Competition is always working to improve their website and in order to keep up “you need to work every single day at something that contributes to your SEO success.”

Patience – SEO is a slow gradual process that occurs on its own schedule. Most successful campaigns don’t happen overnight; successful campaigns can take months and months of continual improvements and growth.

Perseverance – No matter how hard you work the Search Engines maintain most of the control, meaning that SEO campaigns do experience highs and lows. In the long run “those who persevere in SEO are those who eventually win.”

While we agree with all of these concepts there are some additional attributes that we encourage our clients to pursue.

1. Be Permissive & Flexible

Many may regard being permissive as a negative attribute – especially in a business world that expects people to take control. However, when it comes time for SEO, clients must give some control over to their SEO provider. In order to perform a proper Site and Server Analysis or to apply new Content Pages SEO companies must have permission to implement changes and have access to the website files.

2. Have Purposeful Specific Goals

Rather than approach your SEO Campaign with the goal of simply “improving business” or “doing better” it can be more beneficial to have very specific goals set out at the start of the campaign. These goals may include:

  • Increase traffic by 150%
  • Double website sales in one year
  • Increase customer inquiries to 6 per day
  • Increase website sales of X product line by 50% in 3 months

Sharing this purpose with your SEO provider at the start helps to set realistic expectations and provides a benchmark to assess the success of the campaign. It also helps your SEO Consultants put all their optimization effort towards accomplishing your goals.

3. Stay Practical

Starting an SEO Campaign with a practical mindset can be very important as well. You would never purchase a Smart Car expecting it to take your family of six on a road trip across the country. Neither would you hire an accounting student to complete your multi-national company’s taxes for the year. It’s just not practical.

Be practical and choose the right size SEO Campaign that will help achieve your Purpose or Goals. A good SEO provider will help assess your needs and design a campaign that is the right size (regardless of budget).

4. Be Prepared

Finally, be prepared to see results. With persistence and patience and the right SEO service provider you should be able to meet or even exceed your goals. Be ready for your phone to ring with more inquiries, or inbox to fill up with customer quote requests, or your online sales to increase. As you create quality content be prepared for other websites and bloggers to link to your website.
