A good SEO content strategy is an essential part of every Internet marketing campaign, so if a client is unwilling or reluctant to make changes to their existing content, then we offer to develop what we call information pages; SEO website content writing designed to support the keyword terms the client is targeting. At 1st on the List we continually get clients who are in serious need of not just more content, but also good search engine friendly content on their website. Yet, many are hesitant to make the necessary changes to their existing site page text.

SEO Content Writing Tips & Advice

SEO content pages can be written in the same voice or tone as the main site pages, but include optimized text copy that supports the target keyword phrases while helping to describe the main products or services to website visitors.

In SEO content writing you will need to naturally integrate proper “key” words (keywords) so that the supporting text will increase search engine rankings and make the website more visible to online searchers.

In addition to naturally representing your targeted keyword phrases on your website, SEO content writing also:

Provides Information that help visitors make purchasing decisions

Includes strong “calls to action” or “closing” action statements

Generally acts as “higher converting” web pages on your site

Developing a good SEO content strategy is essential to both new and existing websites because they provide pages that can achieve high rankings, increase conversions and significantly raise your return on investment.

SEO Content Strategy

Optimized website pages can increase the quality and number of leads both online and offline. Here are three SEO content writing tips that do justice to your products and services, help your content look professional and organized, and send the right messages to the Search Engines.

1. Crafting Optimized Titles, Headings & Sub-Headings

For search engines and searchers alike, a catchy title or page heading that summarizes the page content can be attention grabbing, creating more interest for the information the page has to offer.

For visitors, optimized page titles may cause intrigue, compelling them to read on. For the search engines it helps them understand the core focus of the copy and the relevant keyword phrases plus, it can help increase rankings for both the targeted keywords as well as the site’s overall theme.

Page sub-headings can do the same but they also help make the page more reader friendly, allowing the reader to scan the page for pertinent information that keeps their interest.

2. Researching and Creating Search Engine Friendly Content

As a copywriter who doesn’t necessarily know the company as intimately as the owner or marketing manager, it is necessary to examine the content within the website before beginning to create copy or text content.

Understanding the tone, branding and unique positioning or value proposition is important and it needs to be consistent across the website, which means it must be incorporated into any new SEO content writing.

Additionally an SEO copywriter may need to conduct general industry research to ensure that they have enough information to draw from when writing the optimized website content.

Product or service features are essential but it’s more important to write about the benefits of the product or service, since this is what the reader is after most.

One last useful step in the writing process is to compare products against competitors to gauge any additional benefits potential customers would receive by choosing your products or services over your competitors. These added benefits are then incorporated into the SEO content writing.

3. Strong Calls to Action –
The Signals that “Closing” Statements Send

Some may think that a call to action or “closing action” statement (as it is sometimes called) is not something a search engine would care much about; quite the contrary!

The search engines care more about your call to action than a visitor does. Your call to action helps the search engines understand what type of visitors you want to have at your website.

Information Based - When you have a call to action that says, “read more” or “find out more” or “learn more”, that sends a message to Google and the other major search engines that you are providing information. In turn your website would be more likely to show up for keywords or phrases where the users intent is to gather information; such as phrases that utilize words like “info”, “information on …”, “how to…”, “what is…” etc.

Purchase Based - If your call to action or closing action statement leans more towards “order now” or “buy today” or “contact us”, this sends a message to the search engines that you want to reach searchers who are looking to order your specific products or services as opposed to searchers who are information gatherers. This will cause your website to be shown more when phrases like “order….”, buy….”, “….prices” and “…..comparison” are typed in.

It is crucial for you to reach web searchers throughout the buying cycle. Strong calls to action:

Help to increase visitor conversions

Compel visitors to complete the next step to contact you or order from you

Communicate your intentions to the search engines

As well as align your website’s intentions with the searchers intent

What’s the Difference?
Copywriting Verses SEO Content Writing

Generally a copywriter writes creative and compelling copy and titles (headings) to engage the reader and communicate a message or brand.

Straight ahead copywriting may be effective for communicating to your visitors but they do not always provide the search engines with what is needed for high rankings, which is necessary to get your message in front of online visitors.

SEO content writing differs because while it still needs to be good copy, it is created based around the theme of the keywords or phrases you selected during the keyword research phase of your search engine optimization campaign. In this way each informational content page is focused on a very specific topic.

Creativity is required to craft copy that is compelling while incorporating targeted keyword phrases and supporting text with strong “calls to action”. Often times, this is what the average copywriter misses.

The end goal of your SEO content strategy is to provide valuable, relevant content for your visitors that will help inform and motivate but at the same time meet the criteria of the search engines for top search engine rankings.

This morning I was browsing some information about the Google Penguin update and happened to notice that it was officially launched on April 24, 2012 but only got its endearing name on April 26, 2012.

That means somewhere in the last 2 days Google Penguin had its first birthday.

For those who have not heard the term “Google Penguin” is a code name for Google’s algorithm update designed to lower the rankings of websites that violated Google Webmaster Guidelines by using black-hat SEO practices such as keyword stuffing, cloaking, link schemes and duplicate content.

So in honor of this important milestone for the Google update that sent the SEO community into a frenzy this past year here are five highly informative SEO Google Penguin resources that cover everything you need to know about where it has come and where it is going in the future.

Google Penguin 2.0 and Bad Neighborhoods

Search Engine Watch author Simon Penson covers a variety of factors that can indicate your backlinks are coming from “bad neighborhoods” across the web. He says that no one is in a position to determine what is coming next but that we have been warned:

“Google will turn the knife a little more making link building in its former sense a more risky tactic than ever.”

Penson predicts a heightened level of allowable spam in the future and the increased importance of knowing what neighborhoods your backlinks are coming from.

Google Algorithm Change History

SEOMoz puts together a great resource if you are interested in following all the Google algorithm updates. Perhaps you noticed a change in your website traffic and want to see if it correlates with something Google tweaked. Whatever your reason this is a great resource for seeing all of Google’s updates, dating back to 2000!

Google Penguin Infographic

If you preview pictures over words check out this infographic on Visual.ly outlining the impact, how to be prepared and what Penguin combats.

Google Penguin Slide Share from SES London

This is Kevin Gibbin’s presentation from SES London earlier this year that includes some humorous slides to outline how links evolved and where Penguin stepped in. Generally, he says that Penguin penalizes you for thin or weak content that links to you.

Gibbons also outlines where Google is going next and touches on:

Increasing data signals

Importance of author verficiation and the cost of remaining annonymous on the web

Plus what to do if you’ve been hit.

Some of the pieces of advice I like best because they are fairly unique in link building discussions are to:

Find out what a #1 site profile looks like in your industry and replicate it.

Consider removing links that have no value to users (everyone thinks this but very few have the courage to say it out loud)

Focus on human engagement

Ideas for Link Building in a Post-Penguin World

There are thousands of articles listing ideas for how to keep building links for your website. This one by Anna Moseva posted over at MarketingProfs lists some realistic ways to keep building links. Some of the key items of food for thought include:

Rely on social not for links but for sharing and ask yourself what the point of your social fans and followers if you aren’t showing them your content?

Don’t focus on building links to just one page. Most of your real content is on inner pages of your website where you put videos, posts, articles, guides etc. You need links to these resources.

Quality over quantity means that getting one really good link from a high quality blog is much more valuable than 30 links from unreliable, shady sources.

What the Future Holds for Google’s Penguin

So what’s next for link building and how Google evaluates our website and the link neighborhood it lives in?

Matt Cutts (head of webspam at Google) mentioned at SMX West 2013 that we can anticipate a large Penguin update in 2013 that will be one of the more talked about Google algorithm updates of the year.

If you haven’t already it’s time to start taking your backlink profile seriously!

If the Google Penguin update hurt your rankings or website traffic call us at 888-262-6687. We can help you clean up their shady backlink profile in abide by Google’s new Penguin standards.

Whenever someone asks me the loaded question, “What do you do?” I find myself answering that I work for a local Internet Marketing company that specializes in Search Engine Optimization …. SEO.

I am always prepared to get a puzzled face that recognizes the term ‘SEO’ and prepared to explain in more detail exactly what it means. And this is usually how the conversation plays out:

Me: The whole point of Search Engine Optimization is to make sure that your web pages meet and adhere to the search engine guidelines so that your website will be displayed at the top search engine results pages (SERPs).

Person: But how does SEO work? What does it mean to “optimize your site”?

Me: What search engine optimization does is …

“Improve your web pages and make them better, more useful
and more effective for everyone including the people who visit your site
and for the search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing.”

In other words, search engine optimization helps both the search engines and the visitors.

Person: Oh, you mean like you get the website at the top of the page?

Me: Yes but it’s a little more complicated than just “getting” it there. Websites don’t just magically appear at the top by following a secret formula or paying a fee to Google. There’s much more to it …

Sometimes the person is intrigued and wants to hear more. The rest of the conversation can be summarized below.

SEO Helps the Search Engines

By meeting the search engine guidelines your web pages become more relevant and will in turn, help the search engines to:

Find your web pages easier

Review your web pages faster

Better understand what your website is all about

So they can Index your web pages properly (add your pages to their database)

Rate your web pages more favorably

And list your web pages near the top of the search engine results so people can find you easier

In summary, search engine optimization will help your web pages to:

Be Found

Be Understood

Be Indexed

Be Rated Properly

And Be Visible to people who are searching

SEO Helps Your Visitors

Optimizing your web pages to make them as good as possible will help your website perform better in the search engines, which in turn, puts you in front of the very people who are searching for what you have to offer.

Search engine optimization helps visitors to find your website faster and easier plus your website will:

Be more relevant for the terms people use to find your website

Be easier to navigate

Help visitors find what they came looking for faster

Help visitors make better decisions (sooner) about what you have to offer

Help convert visitors into customers

In summary, search engine optimization will help visitors to:

Find your site faster

Understand your offerings

Make better decisions about what they want

Convert sooner

What Does SEO Do?

While you may not know how to do SEO, there are many ways to optimize your web pages to make them as good as possible for searchers and for the search engines.

During search engine optimization, improvement changes can be made to any of the following (plus much more) to help improve your web pages and your page performance.

So in answer to the question, “What do you actually ‘do’ with SEO?” there are many places to make improvements and changes with search engine optimization including:

Web Page Content

Body Text Content

Keyword Usage

Page Titles

Sub-Headings

Link Text

Images

Meta Data (Meta Titles, Descriptions, Alt Text)

Content Management Systems (CMS)

E-commerce Systems (shopping carts)

Source Code

In-Bound Linking

Page Loading Times

Image Sizing

Site Structure/Architecture

Site Navigation

Social Media/Videos

Server Setup

Hosting

Performance Analytics

Learn More About How Search Engine Optimization Works

By the end of the conversation I usually like to look at the big picture again:

In marketing, the primary goal is to get your message out to as many potential customers as possible so they will buy your product or services.

Online marketing can be very powerful because no other marketing medium has the potential to reach as many potential customers 24/7 as do the search engines.

Search engines like Google simply want to give their searchers the best, most relevant pages that Google thinks will match what is being searched for.

The purpose of doing search engine optimization then, is to try and do just that:

Provide the best, most relevant pages
for the keyword term that was searched on.

If you have an email marketing campaign or send out the occasional email blast to your customers then you have likely asked yourself:

What’s my email open rate?

What’s a good email open rate?

What’s the email open rate average?

What does the email open rate mean?

In today’s article we’ll discuss how to define, calculate, track and improve your email open rate plus share recent study results for the average open rates from over 2,700 brands in over 40 countries.

Even though we do not offer Email Marketing as a core service we recognize it’s interaction with Search Engine Optimization.

For example often our clients set up a goal of driving traffic to their website in order to get new signups for their monthly email newsletter which then converts to new customers. But these sign ups have little value if the newsletter campaign does not encourage sales, customer loyalty, referrals or some other revenue driving outcome.

Because of this connection between SEO and Email Marketing we feel it is important to discuss the most commonly asked questions about email open rate statistics and metrics in more detail.

So let’s dive into a better understanding of email open rates and how we can improve our open rates to better motivate our customers.

Email Open Rate Definition

The most common way to define email open rate is how many people view your email. Define your email open rate as the number of measured opened messages divided the number of delivered messages.

Email Open Rate Calculation:

Opened Emails / Delivered Emails

Average Email Open Rate for Newsletters 2012 Study

Silverpop recently published a study for Email Open Rates for 2012 for messages sent by over 2,700 brands in over 40 countries. The PDF shows great detail of open rates by country and for specific industries including non-profits, travel, consumer services, corporate services and more.

While the unique and gross open rates are useful to compare your email marketing metrics to the most interesting part to note is how much greater of an open rate the top quartile of US brands enjoy. Their unique open rate is over double the median rate and their gross open rate (total opens) is nearly three times as high!

This shows that we shouldn’t limit ourselves by striving for the average when we know that if we can become among the best email marketers we can obtain awesome open rates. When you are trusted, send interesting messages and engage your email recipients you put yourself far above your competition.

How to Track Your Email Open Rate

Most email marketing programs like Constant Contact and MailChimp come with automatic open rate calculators that make it easy to measure your average email open rate for newsletters across time.

You can also track email open rate in Google Analytics to get greater insights including how much time email visitors spend on your site, how many pages email visitors spend and if those email visitors contribute to sale or quote request on your website.

By tracking your own email open rate trends you can monitor whether what you are doing works well. A few items to look at to get you started include:

What newsletter topics get the highest open rates?

What type of email newsletter subject lines get the highest open rates?

What day of the week gets the highest open rate?

What time of the day gets the highest open rate?

Rather than going on other industry open rate metrics you can use your own “best” rates to decide how to outperform yourself.

Increase Your Email Open Rate

All email marketers search for ways to work on improving email open rates. Turning a low email open rate to the industry average email open rate and then above average will give you more motivation, purpose and fulfillment in your email newsletter campaigns.

Here are five simple things you can do to get a good open rate on your email marketing campaign:

1. Clean Newsletter Address Book

There may not be anything wrong with the content, subject line or when you send an email. It could simply be that your address book is filled with email addresses of people who are no longer interested in your services, low quality email leads and even worse, purchased email lists! We know that unsolicited email open rates can hurt your marketing campaign. Make sure your email list is cleaned regularly and contains high quality “leads”.

2. Make a Good First Impression with a Catchy Subject Line

The subject line is such an important first impression you have to make. If it is boring or repetitive you risk the chance of being ignored, deleted or marked as junk. Try focusing the subject line on some sort of benefit to the recipient that will compel them to find out more by opening the email. By creating urgency and “FOMO” (fear of missing out) recipients are more likely to open the email right away.

3. Look at Email Newsletters in Your Inbox

You’re a consumer yourself and you likely get several email newsletters each week to your own inbox at home. Spend some time looking through these and make lists of the “good” and the “bad” practices you see. What makes you want to open? What type of information do you find important? You can even ask a few coworkers, family members and friends to do the same. Now combine all of the good attributes and beef up your own email campaign.

4. Brand Your From Line and Become a Trusted Sender

Constant Contact surveys show that nearly 65% of people cite the “From” line as the most important factor for opening an email. By placing your brand, product or service in the from line will assure your recipients the email can be trusted. It also builds familiarity and credibility over time.

5. Question if You Send Too Often or Not Enough

If you send an email every day you risk wearing out your recipients. If you send an email once a year you risk recipients forgetting about you. Find the right balance between too often and too sparingly for your email list. Consider the purpose of your messages and don’t be afraid to ask recipients how often they want to receive messages.

Today’s post is all about customer reviews and how to deal with our natural tendency to share bad experiences before good experiences.

Just think back to a time where you had a terrible experience with a business. Maybe you were buying groceries, making an appointment at the dentist or calling in for technical support. How many people did you tell?

Now think of a time when you had an amazing experience with a business. The salesperson went above and beyond what was required and your expectations were more than just met.

Finally think of a time when you had average experience with a business. Maybe you had an oil change, made a return or went out for dinner. Did you tell anyone about the experience even though everything you expected happened?

If you are like most consumers you probably told the most people about a terrible experience and the least people about an average experience.

This blog post comes out of a recent survey published by MarketingCharts.com headline that reads:

Bad Customer Service Interactions
More Likely to be Shared Than Good Ones

This means that when people are upset that their expectations (whether real or perceived) are not met they are likely to “badmouth” your business.

Poor Customer Experiences Get Shared in Person and Online!

Customers today have a variety of mediums to share their poor customer experiences. MarketingCharts confirms that:

81% tell friends and family in person about bad customer service

57% tell coworkers in person about bad customer service

45% tell friends online through social media about a bad customer service experience

35% write online reviews through online reviews sites like Yelp and Google Places.

Only 5% don’t tell anyone about a bad customer experience!

If one of your customers has a bad experience for whatever reason you better be prepared for them to share this with someone else in some way shape or form.

There Are More Platforms for Your Customers
to Share Their Experience Than Ever Before

Business owners should be aware not only that the strong majority of customers will tell about a bad experience but that they will also tell about it in multiple ways. Just a few basic examples include:

Telling their family at dinner

Telling the story to a group of co-workers the next day in the lunchroom

Publishing a Facebook post about you to their 200+ friends

Tweeting about your company with hashtags and @’s

Writing a permanent online review about your company on your Google Places listing

The Bad Outweighs the Good,
The Ordinary Goes Untold

Overall we learn that 95% of people share a bad experience where as only 87% share a good experience. All of the satisfactory, okay, not out of the ordinary experiences likely go untold!

5 Tips to Encourage Positive Customer Experiences and
Elicit Positive Online Reviews

As we see, as humans we are more naturally inclined to focus on sharing negative experiences. This means that businesses have to go out of their way to try to get the good experiences shared too. Here are five ways you can start collecting more of the good to outweigh the bad:

Ask. Don’t forget to actually ask the client for a written testimonial after they share how happy they are with the service or product you just delivered.

Promote. Make your Yelp and Google Plus pages visible to all your customers and raise awareness for this method to publish reviews. Negative reviews tend to be placed on these sites; have your happy customers also post their experiences!

Follow Up. Use a follow up email to customers a few days after their purchase requesting feedback. This will come across as “good customer service” while you are getting what you want – feedback.

Highlight. Make sure to highlight reviews on your website so that customers know you are open to their feedback. You can even create a Feedback Form on your website to make it fast and easy for customers to send you their review.

Get Social. Use Facebook to ask your fans for reviews. Post a link to the review page on your website, to your profile on major online directories or even develop a campaign to have customers upload video reviews to your YouTube channel.

How to Respond to Negative Online Customer Reviews

It’s bound to happen to every business; you can’t please everyone.

But what do you do when you come across a negative online review that goes against everything your business works so hard to establish?

Time is everything. As soon as you see a bad review you need to deal with it at the risk of appearing unresponsive, uncaring or secretive says Charlie Pownall.

Admit your mistakes. If your business is at fault don’t be afraid to be honest. Sincerity and humility go a long way in showing that your business is real and makes mistakes too. Offer an apology and share how the problem is being resolved.

Genuine commitment to changing. After apologizing offer a few suggestions of how you are working to ensure the issue doesn’t happen again and what you have learned through the situation.

Follow up. Make sure you add value and try to rebuild trust. True customers can recognize when you sincerely sorry and are trying to make things right again.

Discredit false claims. Take control of reviews that are not true or misleading to others. State the facts clearly without getting into an argument. If something happened that could be perceived as negative explain why it is that way; it could be to protect customers or keep a high standard of service. There is always two sides to a story.

Remember … as Many as 90% of Consumers Say Buying Decisions are Affected By Online Reviews

If you think offline and online customer reviews don’t require your attention, think again.

Constant Contact reports that 90% of consumers who recall reading online reviews say the positive reviews influence their decision to buy. Constant Contact says:

“Today more than ever, consumers want to know they can trust businesses to provide a positive experience before deciding to make a purchase, sign up for a service, or even visit your place of business.

As a business owner, the best thing you can do to get the most out of online reviews is to encourage the people who know you best to share their feedback. While it can be intimidating to ask, the reviews and recommendations from your best customers can have a major impact on your business.”

What are you doing to build your online reviews?

How do you deal with negative online reviews?

Last week an interesting study by Econsultancy in partnership with Adestra came across my desk thanks to MarketingCharts.com. The headline read “Global Marketers Still Rate SEO … as Tops for ROI”

The study found that 3/4 global marketers rated SEO as being either “excellent” or “good” when it comes to Return On Investment. This makes SEO the top rated digital channel in terms of ROI for the second year in a row (see 2012 Results).

The following results were collected from over 1,300 participants who took part in an online survey this January and February 2013:

These survey results are just another way to help answer the question “Is SEO…” that Google’s autosuggest brings up …

No.

Search Engine Optimization is very much alive, worth it and still relevant.

This morning I received a download link from Constant Contact for 10 Facts Why Small Business Owners Need to Pay Attention to Mobile and Local Search.

Interested in what they had to say I downloaded the PDF and was captivated by a few of their statistics:

49% of small businesses
have never updated their online listings.

This local listing statistic seems about accurate. About half our new clients have never attempted to claim or update their business listing on Google even though most of the time it has already naturally been created.

Too busy, not sure how, have tried in the past and failed … whatever the excuse may be you need to claim and update your listing to keep up with new products, special hours, new locations and all the other information your customers need to find you online and get them to come to your business.

50% of small businesses
have seen listings for their business that are not accurate.

You would never print a brochure with your wrong phone number so why do you settle for having an inaccurate local listing? Search Engines like Google and other listing sites such as Yelp do their best to explore the web for your correct information but they don’t always get it right. You need to drive traffic to your business by making sure your most popular listings have accurate information.

84% of small businesses
believe that having a mobile friendly website
is important to their business.

A mobile-ready version of your website is specifically designed for small screens such as mobile phones and tablets. They are fast-loading simplified versions of your regular site and display the most important information that mobile users are looking for including your main products and services plus contact information.

Small business owners have it right with this one. Websites designed for mobile devices are different because they have less content for quick information, faster loading pictures, precise call to actions and are designed for on-the-go use. Plus Google and other Search Engines detect when a search is done through a mobile device and return results for websites that have a mobile web design.

For more information about why mobile websites are important for your business view our Mobile Website Infographic.

… But only 25% of small businesses
know how to create a mobile optimized web site.

If mobile websites are such a critical component of your online presence then why are they so hard to make? For many companies keeping their regular website updated is enough of a task. In this case we usually recommend one of two options:

Upgrade your current website to a “mobile responsive web design” that will detect when a visitor is on a mobile device and display your current design elements and site structure in a “mobile friendly” way.

Install 3rd party mobile responsive plugins if available for your website’s platform.

Either option is fairly affordable and does not require you to completely redesign your online presence. You can check out our Building Websites for Mobile Visitors page for more options.

And last but not least is the most motivating mobile statistics of them all:

85% of small businesses
believe that more people will find
their business on mobile sites in the future.

Think about this:

Three out of four businesses don’t know how to create a mobile optimized web site (which means they likely don’t have one) but almost all small businesses think their customers will find them through mobile sites in the future. This presents a HUGE opportunity for you.

The time to start making your website mobile friendly is now.

Get the early adopter advantage and get ahead of your competition in this area. Start attracting more customers with your mobile website and establish a strong presence in the Search Engines long before your competitors attempt to do so.

Today while checking out how one of our clients listings appears on Bing I was presented with the Bing It On challenge and decided to take a couple minutes to give it a try.

Bing It On is a “Google vs. Bing” challenge that asks you run five different searches and returns side by side Google and Bing results. Each time you blindly choose which one you prefer.

I was a little surprised at the results I got:

I went 5 for 5 in choosing Google’s search results!

Here are three searches I was able to replicate in Google to show you why I chose what I did.

1. The search for “when is the first day of spring” gave me the answer in big bold letters, it couldn’t be missed.

2. The search for College Basketball Scores gave me the most up to date scores on games played last night. I even found out that the San Jose State vs. UTSA game was cancelled.

3. And my last search: “When does daylight savings start” as just another clear reminder to set your clocks back this weekend!

There you have it .. the results to my Bing It On Challenge! Which Search Engine do you prefer?
